Gingersnaps


Ingredients

  • ¾ cup shortening
  • 1 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup molasses
  • 2¼ cups all-purpose flour*
  • 2 teaspoons soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • ½ teaspoon cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Granulated sugar

Directions

  1. Mix thoroughly shortening, brown sugar, egg and molasses.
  2. Blend in remaining ingredients except granulated sugar.
  3. Cover; chill 1 hour.
  4. Heat oven to 375 degrees.
  5. Shape dough by rounded teaspoonfuls into balls.
  6. Dip tops in granulated sugar.
  7. Place balls sugared side up 3 inches apart on lightly greased baking sheet.
  8. Bake 10 to 12 minutes or just until set.
  9. Immediately remove from baking sheet.

*If using self-rising flour, decrease soda to 1 teaspoon and omit salt.
