Custardy French Toast

Try honey as an out-of-the-ordinary syrup for an accent on this French toast.


  • 4 slices white bread
  • 3 eggs
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine


  1. Arrange bread in baking dish, 13½x9x2 inches.
  2. Beat eggs, milk, sugar and salt until fluffy.
  3. Pour over bread; turn each slice to coat well.
  4. Cover; refrigerate overnight.
  5. (If desired, bread can be dipped into egg mixture and cooked immediately. And you’ll find the egg mixture will cover more bread slices.)
  6. Heat butter in skillet.
  7. Carefully transfer each bread slice to skillet.
  8. (Use a pancake turner to avoid tearing the saturated bread.)
  9. Cook over medium heat 4 minutes on each side or until golden brown.


  • Oven French Toast: Heat oven to 500 degrees. Arrange dipped bread on greased baking sheet. Bake about 8 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
